Per information from Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives while in custody since October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has indicated that the true number is probably significantly greater, as a result of numerous of unaccounted for detainees originating in Gaza.

Civilian Casualties

Confidential Israeli data shows that the majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who died in prison were ordinary citizens, based on a parallel investigation.

In May of the current year, a defense forces registry monitoring all militants in Gaza, a roster of over 47,000 identified persons, listed just 21 casualties in detention. By that date, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had perished in jail.

Detention Conditions

Brutality, mistreatment, and further cruelty of Palestinian individuals has become routine across Israel’s prison network over two years of war. Top government figures have publicly referenced inadequate food and an underground jail confining Palestinians who are denied sunlight.

“Regardless of this significant total of casualties, during 24 months not one individual has faced arrest,” the spokesperson stated. “There exist no indictments over any killing.

“While these policies are being applied, all Palestinian detainees in detention is at peril, including the physically well individuals, including the youth who have no medical issues.”

Notable Incidents

Certain fatalities in custody have been widely reported, including a senior healthcare leader who perished in confinement after 120 days in detention.

A prisoner held with the individual stated that he was brought to the yard by guards immediately preceding his death, obviously hurt and naked from the waist down. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Detention administrators and military provided researchers with the number of deaths in detention, and minimal other details for example the site where they lost their lives, but without the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems
