At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
