Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
