Taking action reminiscent of TV series guards, Denmark's foreign affairs department has initiated a nighttime monitoring team—not guarding against mythical threats, but to monitor Donald Trump as Denmark is asleep.

This night monitoring starts at 5 p.m. in Denmark daily and concludes with a summary compiled at 7am, which is then distributed across the Danish government and concerned agencies detailing statements made and events taking place.

The role is believed to have been introduced following the diplomatic row involving Denmark and the US over the Arctic island earlier this year, when the American leader threatened taking control of the resource-rich island.

Analysts note that this measure is among multiple instances of how Denmark's foreign policy and its civil service have had to adjust to the new reality of the second Trump administration.

A source familiar with the foreign office stated, “It's accurate to say that the situation in the region and the time zone gap separating Denmark and the United States was quite an important factor prompting this arrangement during the spring.”

Rather than everybody needing to immediately reach for their phones to catch up on updates from the US, the ministry explained it had made a coordinated approach to remain informed on the president's actions.

An expert, a ex- senior analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, commented that this move demonstrated, “as long understood,” that the notion of the US as Denmark's largest and most important partner was no longer valid. “Partnerships are built on common values and a mutual view of threats,” Kaarsbo said. “Trump lacks both of those with Denmark and I would argue he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
