England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach started as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Beginning with his first major job, he developed a standing through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams led him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the peak in his words.

“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their methods involve player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of the trends but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To develop a process enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. England have guaranteed qualification with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort included stars like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings available to him to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.

His replacement with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to rejoin him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
