India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit set by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15-20x above safe levels.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Changes
For the past four years, officials had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the capital as winter sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the current regional government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, the court agreed to the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited hours throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe readings recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.
International Consequences
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high readings of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the city is resulting from a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as colder air descends.
Health and Financial Impact
Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in Delhi.
