Forecasters are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
